Job Title: Special Education Paraprofessional - Tier II

Work Days: School calendar term or hours as assigned by position

Reports To: Building Administrator

Receives Guidance From:  Special Services Director

 

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Associate’s Degree, 48 college credits, or passing score on the Para Praxis required for specified assignments
  2. Experience Desired:  At least one year of work experience in a position requiring interpersonal interaction skills, knowledge of strategies to support students with behavior disorders.
  3. Occasional physical management of students who may have emotional, physical, and behavioral disabilities.  Frequent exposure to physical and verbal abuse.  This position requires additional training in CPI techniques and Boys Town behavioral strategies, provided by the school district.
  4. Due to the nature of a behavior program and the students assigned, requires the ability to work in a stressful environment.
  5. Regular, reliable attendance. 
  6. Ability to maintain confidential information.

JOB SUMMARY: Works directly with the Alternative Education instructor to provide services and supports to students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  1. Support students in alternative school settings to manage behavior.  
  2. Maintains student progress on behavior and achievement goals.
  3. Conducts observations and collects classroom teacher forms needed for referral and reintegration procedures.
  4. Provides teachers with information regarding progress towards behavior goals based on documentation gathered.
  5. Checks student work and provides tutorial assistance.
  6. Participates in the implementation and revision of student behavior programs.
  7. Supervises student activities, when needed.
  8. Routes and maintains all paperwork between classes for students.
  9. Helps maintain a learning environment; works to ensure student safety.
  10. Actively assists in monitoring during lessons, minimizing distractions and disruptions.
  11. Assists with administering interventions to students; maintains performance records and communicates progress with teachers as needed.
  12. Helps prepare materials and equipment as needed; performs clerical duties such as tracking attendance, grading assignments, photocopying, filing, or creating materials.
  13. Develops and maintains positive relationships with students to contribute to a positive building climate.
  14. Attends staff development training or workshops as requested.
  15. Provides lunchroom supervision and assistance, and playground supervision as assigned.
  16. Maintains the confidentiality of students and staff.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

  2. Climate Environment: The school may or may not be climate controlled.  There may be outside duties; weather conditions may be a factor.
  3. Hazards: This position requires working with many people.  The employee may encounter situations where students are physically or verbally aggressive.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person. Employee may be directly responsible for the safety, well-being of students.
  4. Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit, stand, and walk without fatigue or discomfort. May be required to perform reaching, some lifting or carrying (25 pounds), pulling or pushing (50 pounds), standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
