JOB TITLE: School Library Media Specialist
REPORTS TO: Building Principals
SUPERVISES: None
WORKS WITH: Principals, Asst. Superintendent, Superintendent Instructional Staff, Paraprofessionals.
QUALIFICATION: Certified as a School Librarian
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: High School Media Specialist is 8:00-4:00 daily, school calendar plus ten days. Middle School Media Specialist is 8:00-4:00 daily, school calendar.
JOB SUMMARY: The School Library Media Specialist plans, directs, implements, and evaluates the library program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist students in becoming effective and discriminating users of library resources.
- Helps students develop habits of independent research and use of resource material in relation to planned assignments.
- Assists students with reading selections.
- Guides students in accessing, evaluating, and using a wide variety of materials.
- Updates knowledge of learning and research as applied to information needs of students and teachers.
- Organizes library material, equipment, and facilities for effective and efficient utilization and circulation.
- Keeps the collection current within the constraints of the budget by purchasing quality print and nonprint materials.
- Maintains the library catalog.
- Effectively utilizes clerical, volunteer, students and/or other personnel to provide quality library services to the users.
- Inventories the library collection as well as the library Audio Visual resources, and library computers.
- Supervises the withdrawal of outdated and worn out materials.
- Efficiently organizes and supervises the ordering, processing, circulation, and maintenance of library media center materials.
- Maintains appropriate records of library materials.
- Develops a collection that supports the curriculum.
- Develops a research and library skills program relating to the needs of the students.
- Plans with teachers, when appropriate, for meaningful effective grade appropriate learning tasks and/or literature appreciation activities for students.
- Actively plans with teachers and groups of teachers to integrate library services and multimedia materials with the instructional program.
- Provides instruction in the use of technology to access information outside the library media center.
- Uses a wide variety of teaching methods, media and ways of communicating information to insure that students can access and use all types of information sources.
- Takes a leadership role in promoting and demonstrating the use of new technologies and media with teachers and other adults.
